Neocaridina Green Jade Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi var. “Green Jade”).

About Neocaridina Green Jade Shrimp: Neocaridina Green Jade Shrimp are a variety of freshwater dwarf shrimp originating from Taiwan. Renowned for their radiant green coloration, these shrimp are a popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquarium enthusiasts. Their small size, peaceful nature, and unique appearance make them an excellent addition to planted tanks, nano aquariums, and shrimp-only setups.

Habitat and Natural Environment: In the wild, Neocaridina Green Jade Shrimp inhabit slow-moving streams, ponds, and rice paddies in Taiwan. These environments are characterized by lush vegetation, soft substrate, and stable water conditions. To replicate their natural habitat in an aquarium setting, consider the following factors:

  1. Substrate: Provide a fine-grain substrate such as sand or a specialized shrimp substrate. This will allow the shrimp to forage and burrow comfortably.
  2. Plants: Introduce live aquatic plants like Java Moss, Anubias, and Marimo Moss Balls. These plants offer hiding spots and grazing surfaces for the shrimp.
  3. Driftwood and Hardscape: Incorporate driftwood or smooth rocks to create additional hiding places and surfaces for biofilm growth, a natural food source for the shrimp.
  4. Water Filtration: Employ a gentle filtration system to mimic the slow water movement found in their native habitats.
  5. Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 70-78°F (21-26°C)
    • pH: 6.5-7.5
    • GH (General Hardness): 6-8 dGH
    • KH (Carbonate Hardness): 2-6 dKH
    • Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm (parts per million)
    • Nitrate: < 20 ppm

Feeding and Care: Neocaridina Green Jade Shrimp are primarily detritivores, feeding on algae, biofilm, and decaying plant matter. Supplement their diet with high-quality shrimp-specific foods, blanched vegetables (e.g., spinach, zucchini), and specialized mineral-rich pellets. Avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality.

Breeding: These shrimp are known for their ease of breeding. Provide a stable environment with ample hiding spots and a consistent diet. Female shrimp will carry eggs underneath their bodies until they hatch into tiny shrimplets. Ensure the presence of mature plants and moss for the shrimplets to graze on and find shelter.

Compatibility: Neocaridina Green Jade Shrimp are peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive freshwater species. However, be cautious with fish that may prey on shrimp, and avoid combining them with larger or more aggressive species.
