The Black Fancy Tiger Shrimp, a striking variety within the freshwater aquarium hobby, is admired for its unique, bold coloration and intricate patterns. Known for their deep black stripes and vibrant, almost transparent body, these shrimp add an exotic touch to any planted tank. This shrimp is a Caridina species, and like many in its genus, it requires specific water conditions to thrive.
Conditions for Keeping Black Fancy Tiger Shrimp:**
– Water Parameters: They thrive in soft, slightly acidic water with a pH of around 6.0-6.5 and a water hardness (GH) of 4-6 dGH. The KH should be as low as possible, ideally between 0-1, to maintain the desired acidity and softness.
– Temperature: The ideal range is between 68°F and 74°F (20°C to 23°C). Temperatures outside this range can cause stress or make the shrimp vulnerable to diseases.
– Tank Setup: A well-established tank with plenty of hiding spots, such as live plants, driftwood, and rocks, helps them feel secure. A sponge filter is preferred to prevent young shrimp from getting caught.
– Water Quality: Black Fancy Tigers are sensitive to changes in water quality, so regular water changes (around 10-20% weekly) are necessary. Stable parameters are essential, as sudden fluctuations can lead to stress or even mortality.
– Diet: These shrimp are omnivores and enjoy a varied diet. They can be fed high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein sources, like algae or brine shrimp, to support healthy molting and coloration.
With careful maintenance of water quality and conditions, Black Fancy Tiger Shrimp can live up to two years in captivity and are a beautiful addition to any dedicated aquarist’s collection.
